The Peony Picnic Quilt Pattern

The Peony Picnic quilt pattern might look fancy, but don’t be fooled—it’s totally beginner-friendly (well, confident beginner-friendly). It’s a clever mix of traditional piecing and foundation paper piecing (FPP), which sounds intimidating, but I promise: it’s not.

If you’ve never tried FPP before, don’t panic—it’s basically quilting with training wheels. You get crisp, sharp points and feel wildly accomplished with minimal effort. Seriously, I think you will love it!

This pattern is the perfect excuse to level up your skills and dip your toes into something new. Once you try it, you’ll be hooked. Say goodbye to wobbly points and hello to “Whoa, I made that?!” energy.

The Peony Picnic – Greenery Version

The Peony Picnic Greenery version was 100% inspired by my current obsession with avocado green and chartreuse—you know, those zesty greens that scream “I’m bold, but make it earthy.” I had to sneak them into a quilt, and this one was the perfect excuse.

I’ve always had a soft spot for picnic checks—whether it’s fashion, home decor, or, let’s be honest, anything remotely cute. So designing a picnic-inspired quilt just felt right.

Now I can’t stop thinking about a red picnic check version. Classic, right? That might just be my next quilting adventure… or not. Who knows. I’ll keep you posted (probably with way too many fabric swatches).

The Fabrics – Ruby & Bee Solids

So many Ruby and Bee colors, so little time… but shockingly, this decision was actually easy (for once). I knew I was chasing those yellowy greens with a sweet pink peony pop—chef’s kiss.

The color-picking process was unusually fast for me (no overthinking, no fabric spiral!), but now I’m already dreaming up more colorways with this gorgeous collection. My trusty Ruby and Bee swatch kit came through again—seriously, I use it every time and it never lets me down. I always buy my Ruby & Bee Solids from Hawthorne Fabrics because they carry the full line of colors which makes shopping a breeze.

I know, I know… same story, different quilt. But hey, if it works, it works!

The Quilting

When it came time to finish the quilt, I decided to step out of my usual geometric comfort zone. I went a little wild with Lilo’s Loops from Sew Shabby Quilting and ended up with something softer and less dense than I normally go for… and honestly? I was kind of shocked at how much I loved it. Growth, right?

Just goes to show—you might be pleasantly surprised by something you once turned your nose up at. One minute you’re side-eyeing a quilting style, the next you’re wondering why you didn’t try it sooner. Sometimes stepping out of your creative comfort zone opens the door to a whole new world of possibilities (and maybe even a new favorite go-to).

Colorways – Something for everyone

I could not wait to start playing with colorways for this pattern. With only five colors in the quilt, swapping things around and playing with color theory makes a huge impact. I’m definitely planning to bring a few of these digital daydreams to life at some point…or better yet… maybe you will! All the vector mockups come with fabric details, so if one speaks to your quilty soul, go ahead and make it your own. And if you do—please tag us! We live for that moment. We’re talking full-blown, over-caffeinated happy dance levels of excitement. It’s a whole thing.
