The Delightful Duos quilt was quite literally born in a dream—yes, I sometimes dream in quilts (doesn’t everyone?). I woke up with a vision of a sweet Valentine’s quilt, quickly jotted it down, and then…slept on it for, oh, just a few years.
Why the delay? Honestly, I was nervous to make something I loved that might not be everyone’s cup of tea. But eventually, I grabbed the reins of creative freedom (cue dramatic movie montage music) and got to work.
The pattern combines traditional piecing, appliqué, and embroidery to create what I’d call a whimsical little quilt that’s anything but forgettable. It’s quirky, it’s heartfelt, and it’s got dream-quilt energy written all over it
Delightful Duos – The version from my dream
I started this design by vectoring the 12 Buddies blocks with absolutely no clue how I was going to use them in a quilt. Just me, my computer, and pure chaotic creativity. A few months (and a whole lot of appliqué and embroidery fun) later, the blocks were done—and it was finally time to figure out what the actual quilt would look like.
I went through a million layout ideas, but in the end, I decided to K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple, Stitcher!) and let the Buddies blocks shine. And honestly? I think they do. They’re the stars of the show, no question.
The pattern comes with full-size templates, so you can easily bring your own version of Delightful Duosto life. And just thinking about more of these quilts out in the world makes me a little giddy. I truly believe everyone deserves to be surrounded by happy, joy-filled things.
This quilt feels like my magnum opus. I love it—not just because it radiates happiness, but because it feels like me in quilt form. It took a little courage to trust my gut and put it out into the world, but I’m so glad I did. I hope you have just as much fun making it as I did dreaming it up (literally).
The Fabrics – Ruby & Bee Solids
This quilt has a mix of basic colors and even a few playful patterns tossed in—totally inspired by the Buddies themselves, with a little creative twist. It’s a perfect scrap buster if you’re looking to use up some stash, but I once again leaned heavily on my beloved Ruby & Bee solids. The color range is just too good—and honestly, made for a project like this.
Now, I’ll admit: this quilt includes way more colors than I usually work with. Without my Ruby & Bee color sample box, I would’ve been totally overwhelmed (or crying into a pile of mismatched fabric). Being able to confidently choose and order colors online was a game-changer. No more crossing my fingers and hoping that “soft coral blush” isn’t actually neon orange when it shows up in the mail. I always purchase my Ruby & Star from Hawthorne Fabrics because they are a one stop shop and carry all colors in stock, making shopping so much easier.
Seriously, if you’ve ever been betrayed by a fabric swatch online, you know why having the real-deal samples in hand is a total lifesaver.
The Quilting
Next came the biggest hurdle… how on earth was I going to quilt my little masterpiece? I knew this was officially outside my skill zone, and I wanted something really special—especially to work around the embroidery. So, I did what any quilter in over their head does: I called in the BIG guns.
Enter Stacie Spradlin of Seams Devine a total quilting wizard. I nervously boxed up the quilt, whispered a few prayers to the postal gods, and sent it off out of state, fingers firmly crossed that it would arrive in one piece.
When I got the message that it had landed safely, I could finally breathe again. We chatted about the design inspiration, and then off she went, turning my quilt top into actual magic.
A few weeks later, I got the shipping notification and basically waited by the door until it showed up. I could not get the box open fast enough—and let me tell you, the quilting was everything I hoped for and more. I was thrilled, and immediately got to binding so I could finally share this baby with the world.
Hope you love it as much as I do—it’s truly been a labor of love.
